Australia, Indonesia Strike Historic Defense Agreement
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to formalize the bilateral Treaty on Common Security after extended diplomatic negotiations.
During a joint media briefing in Sydney, Albanese outlined the pact's framework, explaining it mandates high-level discussions between leadership and cabinet officials regarding security matters while evaluating potential individual or collective countermeasures against emerging dangers, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
Prabowo characterized the security arrangement as strengthening and reaffirming bilateral ties between the two Pacific nations.
Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong later issued a statement clarifying the treaty draws heavily from a 1995 security maintenance accord between both countries, representing a substantial expansion of current defense and security collaboration mechanisms linking Australia and Indonesia.
Both heads of state anticipate formalizing the agreement through official signatures in early 2026, the statement confirmed.
