North Korea’s senior official says US has to accept nation as nuclear power
In a statement issued Tuesday through a state-run Korean news agency, Kim emphasized that future dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang must begin with “the recognition of the irreversible position of the DPRK as a nuclear weapons state.”
She also rejected the notion that personal ties between her brother and U.S. President Donald Trump could be leveraged to pressure North Korea into giving up its nuclear arsenal.
Kim highlighted that any potential talks must also account for how Pyongyang’s “capabilities and geopolitical environment have radically changed” since the earlier period of diplomacy during Trump’s presidency.
“Any effort to deny this reality will be thoroughly rejected,” she said, adding that North Korea “is open to any option in defending its present national position.” While recognizing the risks of further tensions, she noted, “it is by no means beneficial to each other for the two countries possess[ing] nuclear weapons to go in a confrontational direction.”
Although she acknowledged that “the personal relationship between the head of our state and the present US president is not bad,” Kim issued a caution: “if the personal relations between the top leaders of the DPRK and the US are to serve the purpose of denuclearization, it can be interpreted as nothing but a mockery of the other party.”
