China Warns U.S. After Taiwan Leader Barred from New York

(MENAFN) China on Tuesday called on the United States to ensure stable and constructive relations between the two countries, following reports that Washington blocked a planned stopover in New York by Taiwan’s top leader.

“China firmly opposes any form of official interaction between the US and the Taiwan region. Firmly opposes any trip by leader of the Taiwan authorities to the US in any name or under whatever pretext,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated during a press briefing in Beijing.

According to media, the Trump administration has rejected a request from William Lai Ching-te to transit through New York in August, during his trip to Central America. Lai was expected to visit Paraguay, Guatemala, and Belize—nations that maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan—but was reportedly informed by US officials that a New York stop would not be permitted, the paper cited three sources familiar with the matter.

Despite the reports, Lai’s office refuted any changes to the travel itinerary. “There is no ‘postponement, cancellation’ of the Taiwanese leader’s trip,” said spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei during a press conference in Taipei, adding that there had been no denial of transit rights by the US.

Reiterating Beijing’s position, Guo urged the US to honor the one China policy and abide by the three China-US joint communiqués. He appealed for cooperation to “promote the sound, steady, and sustainable development of China-US ties.”

When asked about President Donald Trump’s recent remarks indicating he was not pursuing a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Guo deflected: “Refer to the readouts released by the Chinese side.”

Trump addressed the issue directly on Truth Social, saying, “The Fake News is reporting that I am SEEKING a 'Summit' with President Xi of China. This is not correct, I am not SEEKING anything!”

“I may go to China, but it would only be at the invitation of President Xi, which has been extended. Otherwise, no interest! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Discussions between aides on both sides about the possibility of a summit during Trump’s anticipated trip to Asia later this year had surfaced in earlier reports.

Meanwhile, the US and China remain in ongoing talks aimed at easing persistent trade frictions.
