Eide emphasized that this contrasting approach risks damaging the West’s moral authority on the global stage.
He argued that by “very correctly criticizing Russia… but until recently being very quiet on Gaza,” Western governments appear to treat international norms not as universal principles but as flexible options — “a menu that we can pick arguments from,” in his words.
The Norwegian official described the humanitarian conditions in Gaza as “worse than hell on earth” and warned that many nations around the world perceive this disparity as a sign of hypocrisy.
He urged Western leaders to recognize — though not necessarily agree with — the widespread perception of “an inconsistent application of international law.”
The crisis in Gaza began after a surprise assault by Hamas on Israel in October 2023.
In response, Israel launched a large-scale military operation that has resulted in significant civilian casualties, extensive infrastructure damage, and a rapidly worsening humanitarian emergency.
