US Imposes Sanctions on Brazilian Judge
President Trump, a longtime critic of the proceedings targeting Bolsonaro—his previous political ally—has consistently labeled the legal action a political "witch hunt."
He has further threatened to impose a steep 50% tariff on goods imported from Brazil unless the case is halted.
According to the U.S. Treasury Department, Alexandre de Moraes was accused of misusing his authority “to authorize arbitrary pre-trial detentions and suppress freedom of expression."
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared in an official statement, “Alexandre de Moraes has taken it upon himself to be judge and jury in an unlawful witch hunt against U.S. and Brazilian citizens and companies.”
Bessent elaborated that de Moraes has led "an oppressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary detentions that violate human rights, and politicized prosecutions—including against former President Jair Bolsonaro.”
He concluded by asserting, “Today’s action makes clear that Treasury will continue to hold accountable those who threaten U.S. interests and the freedoms of our citizens."
This recent measure against de Moraes marks the most prominent in a series of sanctions enacted by the Trump administration, as it intensifies pressure on Brazil to cease the legal proceedings targeting Bolsonaro.
