Trump urges Israeli president to pardon Netanyahu
In the letter, Trump described Netanyahu as a “formidable and decisive wartime prime minister” and argued that the prosecution against him was political and unjustified, particularly in light of Netanyahu’s stance against Iran. He also stated, “While I absolutely respect the independence of the Israeli Justice System, I believe this ‘case’ against Bibi…is a political, unjustified prosecution.”
Herzog’s office responded that anyone seeking a presidential pardon must follow formal procedures under Israeli law. The law requires that a convicted individual admit guilt and express remorse to be eligible for a pardon—conditions Netanyahu has refused to meet.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid emphasized, “The first condition for receiving a pardon is admission of guilt and expressing remorse for one's actions.”
Netanyahu’s corruption trial began on May 24, 2020, making him the first sitting Israeli prime minister to appear as a criminal defendant. He faces charges in cases 1000, 2000, and 4000, all of which he denies. Separately, the Israeli premier and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant face war crimes and crimes against humanity charges, with ICC arrest warrants issued in November 2024 over atrocities in Gaza, where more than 69,000 people, mostly civilians, were killed since October 2023.
Trump has repeatedly urged Herzog to grant Netanyahu a pardon, including during his recent speech at the Knesset.
