Trump inks bill ending longest US government shutdown
"The extremists in the other party insisted on creating the longest government shutdown in American history, and they did it purely for political reasons," Trump said at the White House as he signed the spending bill. "This is no way to run a country. I hope we can all agree that the government should never be shut down again."
The House of Representatives approved the bipartisan measure in a 222-209 vote just hours before Trump signed it, while the Senate had already passed the agreement earlier, resolving the 43-day funding lapse and maintaining government operations at existing levels through January 30.
The package also includes three-year appropriations for key agencies and programs, and it restores employment for federal workers who were furloughed or terminated during the shutdown.
The partial government closure began on October 1 after negotiations over federal spending priorities collapsed. Thousands of federal employees were left unpaid or forced to work without compensation, while numerous government services were curtailed or suspended.
During the shutdown, Democrats sought to pressure Republicans into extending subsidies under the Affordable Care Act and reversing cuts to Medicaid for low-income Americans that Trump and congressional allies had implemented earlier in the year. Those demands were not met, with Republicans only committing to a future Senate vote on ACA subsidies set to expire at year’s end, as stated by reports.
