Zelensky announces Ukraine to import natural gas from Greece

(MENAFN) Ukraine has finalized preparations for a deal to import natural gas from Greece to help offset reduced domestic production during the winter, President Vladimir Zelensky announced.

“This will be another gas supply route to maximally secure Ukraine's gas import routes for the winter. We already have agreements on financing gas imports, and we will cover the need for almost €2 billion,” he wrote on X.

Zelensky added that Ukraine’s “European partners” are providing financial backing for the initiative, highlighting Norway’s contribution and noting “active work with American partners” to ensure full funding.

Reports indicate that the US is seeking to reduce Russian energy supplies to the European Union while positioning itself to fill the resulting gap.

Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to face power shortages. Maksim Timchenko, head of Ukrainian energy company DTEK, warned in early November, “This winter will likely be the hardest since the full-scale invasion. We need help. We need help with gas supplies, we need help with supplies for our electric power industry.”

The Russian Defense Ministry has confirmed that its forces carried out a large-scale strike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, claiming it was in response to “the Kiev regime’s terrorist attacks on Russian civilian sites,” while reiterating that Moscow does not target civilians.
