WHO Chief Rebuts U.S. Exit Claims

(MENAFN) The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated on Sunday that Washington’s declared justifications for leaving the UN’s health body are inaccurate, cautioning that the move undermines international safety.

In a post shared on the U.S.-based social media network X, Ghebreyesus wrote: "Unfortunately, the reasons cited for the US decision to withdraw from WHO are untrue. The notification of withdrawal makes both the US and the world less safe," underscoring his concern about the broader consequences of the decision.

He emphasized that the United States, as one of the founding members, played a "significantly" important role in advancing the agency’s successes. He also reiterated that the WHO has consistently cooperated with the U.S. and all other member nations "with full respect for their sovereignty."

Looking ahead, Ghebreyesus expressed optimism about renewed engagement, stating: "We hope the US will return to active participation in WHO in the future. Meanwhile, WHO remains steadfastly committed to working with all countries in pursuit of its core mission and constitutional mandate: the highest attainable standard of health as a fundamental right for all people," highlighting the organization’s ongoing dedication to its mandate.

Separately, the WHO defended its handling of the COVID-19 crisis, dismissing American allegations that it mishandled or delayed the dissemination of vital data related to the outbreak.

Addressing further accusations, the organization responded: "The United States also said in its statements that WHO has ‘pursued a politicized, bureaucratic agenda driven by nations hostile to American interests’. This is untrue. As a specialized agency of the United Nations, governed by 194 Member States, WHO has always been and remains impartial and exists to serve all countries, with respect for their sovereignty, and without fear or favour," reaffirming its neutrality and global mission.

According to U.S. officials, the United States has now officially finalized its departure from the WHO, bringing to a close nearly 78 years of continuous involvement with the international health institution.
