Former Chinese Justice Minister Receives Life Sentence for Bribery

(MENAFN) China has sentenced Tang Yijun, former justice minister and senior political adviser, to life imprisonment for bribery. Tang, who also chaired the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, has been stripped of political rights for life.

The court in Xiamen, located in Fujian province, ordered that Tang’s personal assets be confiscated and all illegal gains be recovered and returned to the state treasury.

According to the verdict, between 2006 and 2022, Tang misused his positions in Zhejiang and Liaoning provinces, as well as his tenure as justice minister, to provide improper assistance to others in matters such as corporate listings, land buybacks, bank financing, and case handling.

In exchange, he received more than 137 million yuan (approximately $19.7 million) in cash and gifts.

The case was heard in an open court session on September 11, 2025. In his final statement, Tang admitted to the crimes and expressed remorse for his actions.

The sentence coincides with broader anti-corruption measures within China’s military, as the country’s official military media reported an ongoing probe into top generals aimed at eliminating “watered-down” combat capabilities.

“The resolute investigation and punishment of corrupt officials such as Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli removes obstacles and stumbling blocks that hinder the development of our cause,” a front-page editorial in the People’s Liberation Army Daily stated. Zhang, the PLA’s top uniformed general, and Liu have been under investigation since last month for “suspected serious discipline and law violations,” according to a statement from China’s Defense Ministry on January 24.
