Macron Warns Europe Faces ‘Dual Crisis’ from China, US Instability

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday cautioned that Europe is confronting a “dual crisis” driven by China’s booming trade and rapid shifts in US policy, warning that the continent’s economic and strategic environment has deteriorated since the 2024 Draghi report on EU competitiveness.

In an interview with European media outlets, Macron described Europe as facing an "immense challenge" in a world increasingly marked by disorder. He noted that the US, once seen as a permanent guarantor of European security, "now casts doubt," while Russia, which had previously supplied affordable energy, ceased doing so three years ago.

Macron also highlighted China’s growing economic influence, saying the country has shifted from being a key export market to an "increasingly fierce competitor."

Commenting on developments since former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s report, Macron said the situation "has worsened dramatically," noting: "Today, China has a trade surplus of $1 trillion with the rest of the world ... at the same time, Washington has imposed tariffs on us," as quoted by French broadcaster.

Draghi’s 2024 report had warned that inaction could lead to a gradual decline of the EU. Macron summarized the current challenges by saying: "In reality, we are facing a dual crisis: a commercial tsunami from China and split-second instability from the American side," just days ahead of the EU leaders’ meeting in Brussels.
