Firecracker Store Explosion Leaves Dozen Dead in China

(MENAFN) A devastating explosion tore through a firecracker store in China's central Hubei province Wednesday afternoon, killing 12 people and triggering a fire that emergency crews raced to contain, state media reported.

The blast struck at approximately 2 p.m. local time (0600 GMT) in Zhengji town, within the city of Xiangyang, according to a state-run news agency, which cited local authorities in its reporting.

The force of the explosion and the resulting fire ravaged an area spanning roughly 50 square meters — approximately 538 square feet — underscoring the intensity of the blast at the commercial site.

Emergency response teams mobilized swiftly, arriving at the scene and successfully bringing the blaze under control by around 3:30 p.m. local time (0730 GMT), roughly 90 minutes after the initial explosion.

All 12 victims were found dead at the site, with authorities recovering the bodies following the containment of the fire.

The precise cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. An investigation is now underway, though officials have not indicated when findings are expected to be released.
