China's Xi Extends Congratulations to N. Korea’s Kim on Reelection
Xi, who simultaneously holds the position of general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, expressed his readiness to work alongside Kim to "write a new chapter" in the enduring friendship between Beijing and Pyongyang, Chinese media reported.
Kim secured his reelection to the top party post during the Workers' Party of Korea's ninth Congress, held Sunday in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang.
North Korea's political architecture places the ruling party — rather than the state presidency — at the apex of national power. The general secretary position represents the party's highest office and, by extension, the single most powerful role in the country.
