China Calls on US to Safeguard Chinese Journalists’ Rights

(MENAFN) China on Monday called on the United States to take practical measures to ensure the rights and working conditions of Chinese journalists, as tensions between the two countries over media access and visa policies continue.

According to reports, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian argued that Beijing has adopted a cooperative approach toward American journalists, including providing visa facilitation and allowing them to carry out reporting activities in China. He contrasted this with what he described as limited approval of applications submitted by Chinese journalists seeking to work in the United States.

“In recent years, China has shown flexibility and provided visa facilitation for quite a few US journalists coming to China to do reporting, whereas Chinese journalists’ applications for reporting in the United States have rarely been approved,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing.

His remarks followed reports that a foreign correspondent had been instructed to leave China, while US authorities subsequently revoked the visa of a Chinese state media journalist based in the United States.

According to reports, Lin defended Beijing’s criticism of the newspaper involved in the dispute, arguing that its coverage provided a platform for views that China considers supportive of Taiwan’s separation from the mainland.

Lin defended Beijing's criticism of the newspaper, accusing it of providing a platform for “Taiwan authorities to peddle separatist rhetoric" and calling “China’s Taiwan region ‘a country.'"

According to reports, Chinese officials maintained that media-related issues should not be politicized and urged Washington to take steps that would help ensure fair treatment for Chinese journalists working in the United States.
